Launch of the One Stop Health Care Solution
April 8, 2017

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) collaborates with the Karachi Down Syndrome Program (KDSP) to offer the first of its kind, 'one stop health solution' making it easy for parents to bring their children to conveniently see different specialists at AKUH, in one clinic. Up until now, parents in Pakistan would struggle to find the appropriately trained specialists to treat separate health challenges faced by their children with Down syndrome, often fleeing from one hospital to another and finding it's all a wild goose chase.
Today, a team of internationally trained and experienced child specialists practicing at the AKUH, led by Dr. Salman Kirmani and Dr. Babar Hasan, joined forces with the world renowned Down syndrome expert, Dr. Brain G. Skotko, as well as the founder of KSDP, Mr. Ali Allawala, and staff, to share best clinical practices for Down syndrome management at a session held in the AKU auditorium. This session was attended by medical professionals and students, Down syndrome parents and families as well as supporters of the cause.
Speaking about the launch, Dr. Salman commented,
"The new Down syndrome Clinic at the AKUH became possible because of conversations with KDSP. We have been informally working with KDSP for 3 years, and now spreading the word so the medical community is aware and can guide these individuals to the Down syndrome clinics where all their healthcare needs can be met."
Mr. Ali Allawala said,
"I am proud to see the formal launch of the Down Syndrome Clinic at the AKUH, which will not just give people with this condition the treatment they need, but also enhance the skill set of doctors responsible for their care."
While speaking live from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, on this occasion of the first Down Syndrome Clinic launch in Pakistan, Dr. Brian Skotko said,
"According to a research study by the American School of Medical Genetics about self-perceptions from people with Down syndrome, about 99% expressed being happy with their lives", and even though it is challenge and adjustment for families, "99% of the parents, and 97% of the siblings, love their child/sibling with Down syndrome."
Approximately one child in every 800 live births around the world is born with Down syndrome. Down syndrome is a condition in which babies are born with extra genetic material from chromosome 21. Children born with Down syndrome are at an increased risk of certain medical conditions such as congenital heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems, Alzheimer's disease, childhood leukemia, and thyroid conditions. The degree of these conditions varies greatly from child to child. However, many of these conditions are now treatable, and early medical intervention can help people with Down syndrome to lead long, healthy and productive lives.

Welcome to Clinical Laboratories
________________________________________
The Aga Khan University Hospital, Clinical Laboratory is a full service laboratory serving patients and doctors all over Pakistan. Our Clinical Laboratory network is comprised of the Main Clinical Laboratory that is located at the Main Hospital Campus in Karachi, several Regional and Stat Laboratories, and over 250 Laboratory Collection outlets (phlebotomy stations) around the country. All our Clinical Laboratory facilities are equipped with the latest machines, instruments and technologies.
Laboratory testing involves a complex set of procedures, equipment, technology and human skills in order to ensure accurate and timely results which doctors depend on for making diagnostic and treatment decisions. Given this complexity, any error occurring in any part of the laboratory cycle, from ordering tests to reporting, interpreting and reacting to results can translate into real harm for patients. We adopt a Total Quality Management System that helps ensure our laboratories establish, manage and monitor a testing process that provides an appropriate qualitative approach for patient testing care services. We regularly participate in External Quality Assurance Programmes for all available tests on our clinical laboratory menu.
Patients and doctors know that they can trust our reporting results for accuracy and speed because our facilities are managed by a team of highly trained and skilled Laboratory Technicians and are supported by experienced Clinical Pathologists (doctors specialized in the examination of organ, tissue, and bodily fluid specimens in order to help make the diagnosis of a disease).
Patients and doctors choose the Aga Khan University Clinical Laboratories because we offer:
• Same day and real time reporting of many test results.

• Critical test results reporting on an urgent basis directly to the consulting doctor or patient.

• Interpretation of reports by our Pathologists and Laboratory staff.

• A holistic service by matching all available data for each test and providing the patient or doctor with an informed report.

Our Clinical Laboratory is a full-service facility and has a range of testing services:

1. Clinical Chemistry (the study of chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body in relation to disease, mostly through the analysis of body fluids such as blood or urine). Focused on patient safety, we provide accurate, precise and reliable test results for a wide range of complex test menus, performed on our state of the art equipment, monitored by qualified and credentialed laboratory technicians, with a robust internal quality control programme as well as an external quality control programme that complies with ISO (International Organization for Standardization), JCI (Joint Commission International), CLSI (Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute) and CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for patient safety.

2. Histopathology (the examination of a biopsy or surgical specimen by a pathologist, after the specimen has been processed and histological sections have been placed onto glass slides). Histopathology reports are not machine produced. They require pathologists with vast knowledge, sub specialization skills and experience. We are the largest Histopathology Centre in Pakistan. We follow international protocols and formats, consistently maintain high reporting standards and continue to stay abreast of new developments and advancements in this field. Some of the most complex cases from all over the country, are referred to our laboratory for testing. Daily departmental consultation conferences are held to discuss difficult and challenging cases. We go all the way to reach accurate and conclusive diagnosis in difficult and challenging cases utilizing all ancillary techniques available without putting additional financial burden on the patient. Different types of cancers and diseases have different types of treatment. Therefore, accurate diagnosis is essential.
3. Molecular Pathology (the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of molecules within organs, tissues or bodily fluids). Our test reporting is unique compared to other laboratories in Pakistan. Reports are provided in the context of other laboratory data and clinical findings, where available. Quality controls are included in each test so that both positive as well as negative samples can be reported with reliability. In the absence of such controls, there can be errors in reporting leading to false positives or false negatives which can result in either over treatment or under treatment of the patient, with hazardous consequences. Any possible discrepancies or borderline results are retested without extra cost to the patient.

4. Hemostasis (testing for blood clotting). We get referrals from all over the country for the diagnosis of inherited and acquired bleeding disorders and hemoglobinopathies. Besides this, we offer an extensive test-screening menu for thrombophilia that covers all aspects of the disease, distinguishing us from other laboratories all over the country. We have a fully automated system for CBC (complete blood count) and peripheral blood smear which has significantly decreased the turnaround times. With the introduction of laboratory automation, quality assurance has risen to a new level. Instruments have been interfaced with laboratory systems, reducing human error as much as possible in analytical procedures but without compromising the level of care. Quality assurance is practiced in our laboratory results in precise and accurate reports. When necessary, we perform, complete immunohistochemical tests on bone marrow biopsies free of cost for the diagnosis of malignant hematological disorders.

5. Microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi). We are the only Microbiology Laboratory in Pakistan that has been given the status of Supra National Lab for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) by the World Health Organization. The Mycobacteriology test menu offers a wide range of conventional, automated and molecular based tests for the diagnosis of tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. In addition, we are the only microbiology setup in Pakistan that has Medically Qualified Doctors with expertise in sub-specialties such as Mycology, Virology, Parasitology, Immunology, Molecular Biology and Infection Control. Our Medically Qualified Doctors are sought after for consultations on antimicrobial therapy, antibiotic stewardship and infection control throughout the country. We follow international standard protocols for reporting strategies. We have a specialized set-up for performing Food and Environmental Microbiology. Our laboratories are critically monitored and quality controlled with a wide range of microbiology media and reagents of international standards.
Besides providing clinical services the faculty and technical staff members working with the Clinical Laboratories are aggressively involved in Laboratory based medical research and teaching. They also conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes nationwide not only for students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, but also for the medical physician community at large.
The Patient Welfare Program ensures access to high quality laboratory services for the less privileged patient community. This program is offered at over 189 Phlebotomy Stations across Pakistan. For details click here

Special procedures offered include nerve conduction studies; electromyography; autonomic testing; evoked potentials; EEG, continuous EEG monitoring and video-EEG. Intra-operative monitoring allows our neurosurgeons and orthopeadic surgeons (bone and joint) to work closely together in performing complicated surgeries with greater patient safety.
We have a well-equipped sleep laboratory that routinely performs sleep studies for the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders including sleep apnoea (stop breathing for a short time, especially when sleeping). This is a multidisciplinary sleep programme that ensures patients receive the best possible care through close collaboration between neurologists, pulmonologists, ear, nose & throat specialists, dental surgeons and psychiatrists.
Each patient comes with their own unique problem and our doctors understand this. They will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan. Our medical teams understand that Mind and Brain diseases can be debilitating and in many cases the patients and their families may need additional support. For this reason, our medical teams have facilitated various patient support groups, where patients and their families can meet and talk to others who are facing similar situations.
Our expertise goes beyond delivering the best medical care. Research is an integral part of the Service Line and our doctors have collectively published more than a hundred research papers in both national and international journals.

The Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Service Line at the Aga Khan University Hospital provides a broad spectrum of diagnostic and treatment options to patients suffering from bone, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle and nerve diseases and injuries that cause pain and affect mobility. The Service Line consists of a team of highly qualified and experienced doctors, surgeons and nurses, specialized in orthopaedics, rheumatology and sport medicine. The services that are offered by our team of experts include but are not limited to, broken bones, fractures, sport injuries, knee replacement, hip replacement, rheumatic diseases and muscular skeletal diseases.
Our Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Service Line specialists work closely with and are supported by clinical imaging (radiology), laboratory, pharmacy, physiotherapy and rehabilitation specialists.

Patients can access our services by making an initial appointment to consult our specialists at the consulting clinics. Following a full evaluation, your doctor will discuss with you the treatment options and develop a treatment plan. This may involve surgery that requires hospital admission for overnight stay or you might be managed in our day care surgery services. Your doctor may refer you for physiotherapy, occupational therapy and pain management. These services provide patients with the support and treatment needed for a quick recovery and to be able to perform routine chores smoothly once again. In the case of a severe accident or trauma, patients can come to the emergency at our Main Hospital Campus.

The Aga Khan University Hospital has multiple specialties all under one roof. This enables our doctors in the Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine service line to work closely with doctors from other service lines in the hospital and ensure our patients receive a holistic approach to meet their health care needs.

The Oncology Service Line at the Aga Khan University Hospital consists of a specialised team of certified, highly trained and experienced oncologists, radiation oncologists, haematologists, surgeons, nurses and technicians who treat specific adult and child cancers and haematological disorders.
Our Oncology experts work with each patient to develop an individualized comprehensive treatment plan to address their specific disease. To aid in accurate and prompt diagnosis, the service line is fully supported by the radiology (including the latest PET-CT scanner), laboratory, pathology and blood bank departments within the hospital. Following diagnosis, our doctors will discuss with you the best treatment options that may involve chemotherapy, surgery and/or radiation therapy. Patients can come to our Day Care Oncology Unit supported by specialized nursing care for outpatient chemotherapy and blood transfusions. If radiation is part of the plan, patients can feel confident with the fact that we have the latest equipment and technology for this therapy.
Since the Aga Khan University Hospital is a tertiary care hospital with many different services all under one roof, our oncology patients receive multidisciplinary medical attention from doctors and nurses in the emergency room, intensive care unit (ICU), special care units, coronary care units, haemodialysis and diagnostic units, if needed. In addition, several specialised clinics for oncology patients are offered such as the anti-coagulation clinic, palliative care and nutrition clinic for a holistic approach to patient care.
Every case of cancer is different and at the Aga Khan University Hospital, our oncology experts recognise this only too well. Our oncologists have set up multiple site-specific tumour boards where cases are routinely discussed to determine the best course of action for our cancer patients.

Our experts can provide autologous, allogeneic and haplo-indentical transplantation techniques, using both myeloablative and reduced intensity conditioning.
Our specialists understand that cancer can be difficult for patients and their families, sometimes leaving you confused, alone and lost. At the Aga Khan University Hospital, patients can attend specific support groups to speak with other patients and families who are going through similar situations. Doctors and nurses also attend to provide tips and information on how to deal with the disease.
The Aga Khan University Hospital has developed a comprehensive cancer registry, which allows a better understanding of the epidemiology of cancer in Pakistan. This also enables avenues for research, looking at biomarkers and potential treatment options than can result in improved patient care.
