AiD’s engineering portfolio also includes several community based infrastructure development projects across Pakistan. These have been funded by international donors including KFW, GIZ, USAID, World Bank and DFID. These infrastructure development projects are based on the principles of Community Driven Local Development (CDLD), which revolves around needs and capacities of the local communities to identify, implement, operate and maintain the projects locally. The projects aim to uplift the living standards of small communities based in under-developed areas and villages through the implementation of various infrastructure schemes such as drinking water supply and drainage networks, roads and bridges, irrigation schemes, health and educational facilities and other similar infrastructure types. These community-led initiatives are typically ‘multi-sectoral’ in nature and include a strong social component. While the social component aims to leverage community engagement through formation of COs (community organizations) – which serve as a community need assessment mechanism, the engineering component overlooks the design and construction monitoring of infrastructure schemes. Our work is largely shaped by this over-arching vision and also the reason why gender, local governance, participatory development and institutional capacities have been the central focus in virtually all AiD projects.
